Quickbooks 2009 - Error -6000, -83: An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file

This error generally happens for one of two reasons:
  1. You haven't updated to the latest version of QB2009 (presently R5).
  2. You are running QB2009 on a network and some or all of the workstations have hosting turned on.

If you haven't updated to the latest version of Quickbooks, then you should. It is really easy to do:

  1. Open Quickbooks.
  2. Before opening a company file, click on Help -> Update Quickbooks.
  3. Click on the Update Now button.
  4. Click on the Get Updates button.
  5. WAIT! If you are not on a really highspeed connection, this process can take quite a while. The R5 maintenance release is over 95MB!
  6. After the updates have downloaded, close Quickbooks and then reopen it. You will be prompted to install the updates you just downloaded.
  7. Click Yes and OK to all prompts and reboot. There - QB2009 is now R5!

More than likely, however, you are receiving this error if you are on a network and multiple workstations have hosting turned on. To correct this:

  1. On all computers EXCEPT for the server, click on File -> Utilities -> Turn off hosting.
  2. On the server, click Start -> Programs -> Quickbooks -> Quickbooks Database Manager.
  3. Scan the applicable folder for Quickbooks files (if you don't complete this step you may still get the error message even after turning off hosting on all other computers).
  4. Once the scan is complete, try to open the company file again from a workstation and you should be good to go.
